Police in the Gambia have arrested twelve people who participated in what the authorities term as an “unauthorized” procession on April 19th. The arrests come after the Inspector General of Police denied a permit request filed by youth groups Niumi Hand and Gambia Participate on April 17th.

The police stated, “This action came after the Office of the Inspector General of Police denied a permit for the procession to the youth groups Niumi Hand & Gambia Participate on April 17th. Despite the denial, the youths from both groups decided to proceed unilaterally,” the police said.

According to a police statement, eight people were arrested in Banjul and four in Niumi. The detainees are currently being processed to determine appropriate charges.
