The vice president of The Gambia, Ousainou Darboe, has on Thursday launched a report compiled by Action Aid The Gambia that seeks to address irregular migration of youths from the country to Europe through the Mediterranean Sea.
The Action Aid compiled the report to help government and other stakeholders understand not just the causes of the irregular migration but be able to proffer lasting solutions to it.
The executive director of the Action Aid, Omar Badjie, said finding a solution to irregular migration would require a collective effort from both government and civil society players.
The vice president said the government stands ready all times to engage civil society in all efforts geared towards poverty eradication.
Meanwhile, VP also launched the Action Aid strategic paper which is to be implemented within a 6-year period and costing £12 million.
The Action Aid Gambia and Denmark did a study identifying the push factors of youth migration to Europe and ways to tackle the menace.
Gambia is one of the leading destinations of migrants arriving in Italy from West Africa. The country has lost thousands of its youthful population to the desert route.
The report assessed two settlements in Gambia, Bwiam and Njaba Kunda and it found out that in a three-year period, 23 natives of these communities died on the desert route.
And in a community of 3, 600 people, Njaba Kunba, 700 have left and are currently in Europe. Bwiam, though affected, but not as much.
