Government is currently reviewing its policy that was intended to reduce its fleet of vehicles enabling them to save up to D300 million a year, said finance minister Mambury Njie.
The “vehicle policy” as it is being called has been initiated by former finance minister Amadou Sanneh and it has been presented before lawmakers and approved.
Its intent was to reduce the large fleet of Government and lay off drivers in the process.
It was expected that the policy could save Government up to D300 million but Njie said the policy has technical hiccups and it is currently being reviewed.
The implementation of the policy started with increment of transportation allowances for Government workers but that is how far it went. However, Government critics including the former finance minister said the policy was not implemented because of political considerations.
Amadou Sanneh said President Adama Barrow had cold feet about the policy, saying it will make the Government unpopular.
Meanwhile, the press conference was jointly done with deputy director of International Monetary Fund, Tao Zhang, at the conference hall of the Finance Ministry.
Zhang said Gambia’s economy is steadily recovering.
