The newly appointed Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy in Banjul, Andrew Posner, accompanied by Strategic Communications Specialist Fatoumatta Ceesay, paid a courtesy visit to Kerr Fatou, one of The Gambia’s leading online media platforms, on Monday. The visit aimed to foster stronger ties and mutual collaboration.
During their visit, Mr. Posner engaged in productive discussions with the management and staff of Kerr Fatou, emphasizing the pivotal role of media in promoting transparency and accountability. The conversations centered on the significance of a free press, encouraging dialogue, and supporting media development in The Gambia.
Mr. Posner reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to collaborating with Gambian media organizations to uphold press freedom and democratic values. He expressed admiration for Kerr Fatou’s gender-inclusive workforce, noting that nearly 60% of its staff are women. This, he said, highlights the platform’s dedication to gender equality in the workplace.
Fatou Touray, CEO of Kerr Fatou, welcomed the visit and reiterated her commitment to fostering initiatives that promote quality journalism and media empowerment in The Gambia.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the Public Affairs Section plays a key role in communicating information about the United States, its government, policies, institutions, people, and culture. The section also organizes conferences, seminars, and discussions with visiting American officials and academics, as well as virtual exchanges between American and Gambian counterparts.
Additionally, the Public Affairs Section manages the Embassy’s outreach initiatives, which include speaking programs, Embassy presentations, and maintaining the Embassy’s website and social media platforms.
This visit underscores the Embassy’s dedication to supporting media development and strengthening bilateral relationships between The Gambia and the United States.
