BANJUL, 14 February 2025

On behalf of the United Nations Country Team in The Gambia, I extend my warmest congratulations to His Excellency President Adama Barrow, the Government, and the people of The Gambia as they celebrate 60 years of independence.

This Diamond Jubilee marks a significant milestone in The Gambia’s journey as a sovereign nation. Since gaining independence in 1965, The Gambia has demonstrated remarkable resilience and progress, transitioning from colonial rule to become a beacon of democratic values in West Africa. The peaceful political transition in 2017 particularly showcased the Gambian people’s unwavering commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

Over the past six decades, The Gambia has made significant strides in human development, poverty reduction, and institutional strengthening. The country’s achievements in expanding access to education, improving healthcare services, and advancing gender equality stand as testament to its dedication to sustainable development and the well-being of its people.

The United Nations remains steadfast in its partnership with The Gambia. We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the country’s development priorities as outlined in the National Development Plan and the path toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Our collaboration spans crucial areas including climate resilience, youth empowerment, economic diversification, and strengthening democratic institutions.

As The Gambia embarks on its seventh decade of independence, the United Nations system pledges to continue working hand in hand with the government and people of The Gambia to build a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for all Gambians.
