This is the second press conference the Turkish embassy has held on the attempted coup since 2016.
As the second year anniversary approaches since the 2016 attempted coup, the Turkish ambassador has held a press conference explaining to Gambians one of the biggest threat to their democracy since its founding.
The Turkish citizens in Gambia will gather at the embassy on Friday to commemorate the day that ambassador Ismail Sefa Yuceer described as a “bloody attempt that was thwarted by the bravery and sacrifice of the Turkish people”.
“As a matter of fact, July 15 was a trial of strength and perseverance for the Turkish democracy and the state. It makes us proud to have passed this test,” Yuceer told Gambian journalists.
The attempted coup which was orchestrated by Fetullah Terrorist Organisation has killed 251 while wounding over 2, 500 people.
The press conference also show the playing of a video on the coup which some journalists were seeing for the first time.
Three Gambian journalists who are also invited to Turkey in relation to the event have attended the press conference and are expected to leave the country on Thursday.
Gambia was the first country to close down a FETO school in 2014, said Yuceer. In 2017, the Maarif Foundation opened its first school in the West African nation that will hold its first graduation on Sunday.
“This cooperation in the fight against FETO is important because we cannot classify terrorists as your terrorist and my terrorist. We must fight them together,” Yuceer said.
