The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) has recommended the government to ensure sufficient funding for the Child Protection Unit in The Gambia.
“The Government should ensure sufficient funding to the Child Protection Unit, capacity building of the staff, construct a separate structure that will reflect the new trend, hire experts such as psychologists, interpreters, social workers, vehicles and fuel should be allocated to enable the unit to embark on sensitization at all times to prevent SGBV Crimes,” the commission said.
It also recommended the government to establish a mechanism to implement a Victim Support Fund in compliance with its obligations (e.g. Section 9, of the Domestic Violence Act 2013 establishes the Domestic Violence Support Fund).
Government on Friday made the TRRC report public, after the submission of the report to Barrow in November.
Among others, the Commission (TRRC) has recommended for the prosecution of former president Yahya Jammeh for the rape of Fatou Jallow (Toufa). The Commission further recommended the prosecution of former interior Minister, Ousman Sonko for raping a 15year old and harassment of five female prison officers.
