Transport Councilor At BAC Issues A Response To Dr. Ismaila Ceesay
By Buba Gagigo
Addressing Dr. Ismaila Ceesay’s remarks, Secretary General and Party Leader of Citizens’ Alliance, Sheriffo Baiyo Sonko, the Transport Councilor at Brikama Area Council, pointed out that Dr. Ceesay has not disapproved of insults made in the presence of President Adama Barrow during his meetings.
“It’s clear that you have chosen to support President Adama Barrow despite previously criticizing his leadership. Many have questioned the integrity of your decision and the moral values you impart to the young generation, given your shift in allegiance for what appears to be opportunism for political position. You’ve recently advocated for a law against insulting behavior on social media, and you’ve also expressed support for President Barrow’s statements made in Soma. While I agree with the idea of regulating online discourse and addressing the need for responsible communication, I must point out some inconsistencies in your stance,” he said.
Baiyo noted that Dr. Ceesay’s affiliation with the President’s gatherings is widely recognized, where he observed instances of insults, bullying, and unethical language being used without his disapproval. Baiyo further highlighted that, during the presidential campaign, political leaders endured insults in the presence of Dr. Ismaila, who chose to remain silent.
“The derogatory remarks made by a member of your team against the Jolas went unpunished despite your presence in the Gambia. Similarly, the disrespectful treatment of Darboe by Madam Sumareh was not addressed by you or the police. This inconsistency in addressing insults and unethical behavior suggests hypocrisy in your actions. If one compromises their principles for financial gain, it becomes challenging to view matters objectively. You seem to suffer from tunnel vision, only acknowledging issues against the president, which aligns with your current affiliation.
“Your role as an educator and mentor to the young generation holds immense responsibility. The current example you set by prioritizing personal gain over principles and values is concerning for the future of our country. The behavior you exhibit does not reflect the ideals we want our young university students to emulate,” he said.
In response to Dr. Ceesay’s reference to the Millennium Development Challenge Award received by the President, Bayio said it’s essential to distinguish the timing of the award.
“The award came during a period when concerns about the president’s dictatorial tendencies were less evident. However, it’s apparent that such recognition may not be granted to the current government due to the changing circumstances,” he said.
He also urged Dr. Ismaila Ceesay to consider his position and responsibility as a role model.
“Honesty and integrity should guide your actions, especially if you have aspirations for leadership. Your decision to betray your former political affiliation for personal gain has consequences not only for you, but also for the students you influence. Parents in The Gambia may consider seeking the dismissal of educators who exhibit immoral behavior, as this is one way to protect our young students from the dangers of sycophancy. It is never too late to reassess your path and ensure that your actions align with the values and principles you wish to instil in the next generation. I hope that you will reflect on this and make the necessary adjustments for the sake of your morality and the betterment of our nation,” he concluded.
