Sheriffo Baiyo Sonko was questioned by a panel of officers from the Serious Investigative Unit (SIU) at the Kairaba Police Station on Friday.
According to sources, Sonko was questioned about a complaint reportedly filed against him by two Police Intervention Unit (PIU) officers. The complaint is still under investigation, and Sonko will be kept overnight for further questioning at the PIU location in Kanifing.
Our sources have revealed that the investigative panel told Sonko that Badou Jeng and Malick Saine, both PIU officers, filed the complaint, alleging that Sonko’s recent Facebook posts had instilled fear for their safety and the safety of their families.
During the interrogation, we are told by sources that the panel also requested that Sonko clarify a specific Facebook post in which he asserted, “We shall win this fight.” Sonko reportedly explained that he was referring to his political party’s determined efforts to secure victory in upcoming elections, and that was the context behind his statement.
Meanwhile, Momodou Sabally, who was called in for questioning in connection with a Facebook post he wrote, is presently at Kairaba Police Station.
As we go to press, the police have not disclosed whether any charges will be filed against either Sonko or Sabally.
