The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has confirmed that Senegalese security forces have intercepted and repatriated 45 migrants, including 41 Gambian nationals.

According to a statement from the GID, the migrants were handed over to Gambian authorities on March 18, 2025, at the Amdalai Border Post. The group consisted of 41 Gambians, two Guineans, and two Senegalese, all residing in The Gambia.

“Immigration Officers at Amdalai, supported by Public Health Officers and Gambia Red Cross volunteers, witnessed the arrival of 45 migrant returnees from Senegal on the 18th of March 2025 at the Amdalai Border Post. The group, which included 41 Gambian nationals, 2 Guineans, and 2 Senegalese, all residents in The Gambia, were intercepted by Senegalese authorities and returned to the Gambia through the Amdalai entry point,” the Gambia Immigration said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the migrants had departed The Gambia near Old Jeshwang, sailing through an island known as ‘Basarr’ in Senegal before venturing into deep waters, where they were intercepted by Senegalese authorities.

Following a screening process at Amdalai, the Migration Management Unit in Barra, in collaboration with the Red Cross Society, facilitated the transportation of the migrants to Banjul to reunite them with their families.

The GID reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives of vulnerable migrants and strengthening border security through effective service delivery.
