The Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard) described as a ‘joyful moment’ the resumption of the 2021-2022 tourist season, after almost a 2-year closure due to the pandemic.

“It is a joyful moment not only for the government, but for the entire tourism sector. It means a lot to us,” Adama Njie, the Director of Marketing at GTBoard told Kerr Fatou.

He made the remarks following the news that the maiden batch of holidaymakers for the season, numbering 182, would arrive at the Banjul International Airport at 1pm on Friday.

According to the GTBoard, Eight other flights are due to arrive in the coming days.

Prior to this development, the Gambia’s tourist season which runs from October to May was closed for almost 2 years due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The closure led to the partial or complete closure of businesses as well as laying off staff in the sector.

However, the resumption of tourism this year,  is expected to resuscitate affected businesses in the sector as well as bring in a lot of foreign exchange for the Gambia.
