Jerrehba Jammeh, the former Deputy Ambassador to Mauritania recalled months ago, has reportedly refused to leave the embassy.

Jammeh was recalled following allegations of mismanaging a $5,000 contribution from President Adama Barrow intended for the Gambian community in Mauritania.

According to a source close to the Gambia Embassy in Mauritania, the recalled Deputy Ambassador continues to report to work daily.

“He comes to work every day, but he doesn’t talk to anyone,” the source revealed.

When asked about the situation, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lang Yarbo, confirmed Jammeh’s recall and expressed concern over his actions: “Yes, I remember his recall. If, he is reporting to the Embassy, that is a mistake on his part and he should advise himself appropriately. Diplomats don’t engage in such behavior. He was recalled for a good reason. He has no right to force himself on the Embassy. The most responsible thing he needs to do is pack and return home.”

Regarding whether Jammeh is still receiving a salary, Yarbo declined to comment on his earnings but emphasized that the former Deputy Ambassador, as an elder, should follow the rules governing diplomatic service.

“Well I would not want to comment on his earnings or whatever but what I can confirm to you is that the former DHM as an elder citizen should advise himself and comply with the rules governing the service. Rules are meant to be obeyed, especially if one is a diplomat in a foreign land,” he added.

The Permanent Secretary also urged those close to Jammeh to help him understand the importance of doing what is right:

“In our culture, it means a lot to be an elder. When assumptions and perceptions are different from reality and the truth, it doesn’t matter what one does to twist a story or sell a particular narrative, the truth and reality will eventually come out. The former DHM needs help to understand what is lawful and right,” he concluded.

Jerrehba Jammeh has been replaced by Saikouba Jarju, former National Assembly Member for Busumbala constituency.
