PURA to Decide On Radio Stations With Expired Licenses This Week
By Buba Gagigo
Emma Mendy, Director of Licensing and Enforcement at the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), has announced that PURA will make decisions regarding radio stations operating with expired licenses by the end of this week.
“We had a press conference about a week ago, where we informed the general public that we have received the approval of the Honourable Minister of Information to revoke licences that do not comply. So right now what we are doing, there is an inter ministerial and stakeholder committee that has been established. We are going through all the applications that have been received and the representation made. And hopefully by the end of this week, a decision will be made on the licenses that will be revoked, and you will be informed in due course, but something is being done about it. We received a lot of applications over 33 applications. And we have the same people that are doing all that review and also entertain all the representation that is made. So hopefully by the end of this week, you will hear something from us,” Emma Mendy stated during a press conference on Monday.
Earlier this month, PURA addressed concerns about radio stations operating with expired licenses and those that ceased operations without notifying the Authority, thus violating the PURA Act and Section 235(1)(a) of the IC Act.
