State House, Banjul, 31st October 2024: His Excellency President Adama Barrow Thursday received a team from the National Social Registry Secretariat and The Gambia Bureau of Statistics at the State House in Banjul. The purpose of the visit was to register the household of the President and to encourage the public to register their households.

During a discussion with the team, the President highlighted the vital role of data, stating “Digitalisation requires data to support development programmes and even at the household level, data is crucial.” He added that if you don’t have the right data, you can’t plan well. He further encouraged everyone to take part in the exercise to provide data that can be used for planning and implementing social protection programmes.

The Gambia Social Registry is an information system the government is putting in place to support the determination of potential eligibility for social protection programmes. It seeks to support the most vulnerable members of society and provide accurate data for various programmes.

The Social Registry Manager at the National Social Protection Secretariat, Fily Susso, acknowledged the support of the Office of the President in recognising their effort to improve social protection services, especially for the vulnerable.

According to the Statistician General of the Gambia Bureau of Statistics, Mr Nyakasi Sanyang, The Gambia is set to advance a modern and comprehensive social protection system and a social registry that will provide a “one-stop shop databank on health, agriculture, education, source of income and households needing assistance.

The Social Registry started in rural Gambia in 2020 and is in its final phase in the Kanifing and Banjul Municipalities.
