The nomination process for the upcoming by-election in Banjul’s Half Die Ward continued on Saturday, with Momodou Salifu Jallow, the candidate for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), formally submitting his nomination documents to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) office in Banjul.

Jallow presented all the required documentation to the IEC’s returning officer, Sulayman Joof, confirming his intention to contest the vacant councillorship seat.

The by-election was triggered following the vacancy left by former councilor Momodou Bah of the National People’s Party (NPP), who was elected in 2023. According to reports, Bah traveled to Europe on official duties and has since not returned, prompting the IEC to declare the seat vacant.

Receiving the documents, Returning Officer Sulayman Joof acknowledged receipt and assured the candidate that the commission would review the submissions before communicating his eligibility status. He also reminded Jallow of the campaign code of conduct and urged strict adherence to electoral laws throughout the campaign period.

Jallow was accompanied by supporters and PPP members who described him as a dedicated, community-driven youth. They arrived at the nomination venue in a subdued manner, citing respect for Christian community members currently observing Lent.

Speaking to reporters after the submission, Jallow expressed confidence in his candidacy and optimism about the upcoming polls.

“I have a proven track record, not only in Half Die but Banjul at large, and by extension the Gambia. I have always worked for the livelihood of my people for the betterment and advancement of my community for the past decade or so,” Jallow said.

He stated that his motivation to run for councillor stems from his deep passion for serving his community, adding that his track record and competence speak for themselves.

Jallow emphasized that he has long been engaged in community work within the Half Die Ward, noting, “This is nothing new to me—I’ve been serving this community for years.”

Commenting on the modest nature of his nomination, he said, “We chose a low-key approach out of respect for our Christian brothers and sisters who are observing Lent. Had it been Ramadan, we would expect the same consideration.”

Former National Assembly Member Duta Kamaso asserted that the Half Die Ward seat rightfully belongs to the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), citing historical records to support her claim.

She noted that Momodou Salifu Jallow was born and raised in Banjul, and praised his upbringing, crediting his parents for instilling strong values.

“Jallow has grown up with the people of this community, so they know who he is, just as he knows them. There is a mutual understanding and connection that only comes from being part of the community from a young age,” she said.

She emphasized that Jallow has strong backing from herself and many other influential figures within the party. “We are going to win this seat because it rightfully belongs to the PPP. If you check the archives, this ward has historically been ours—and we are taking it back,” she declared confidently.

Other speakers at the event included the National Assembly Member for Banjul North and the leader of the People’s Alliance Party, both of whom publicly endorsed Jallow. They shared their confidence in his leadership and expressed optimism about his ability to represent and serve the people of Half Die effectively.

“This young man lives in Half Die, understands its challenges, and is the best person to represent the ward,” said Ebrima Tabora Manneh.

Hon. Modou Lamin Bah added, “Jallow is competent, and I know he will not fail the people of Half Die.”

The by-election is scheduled to take place on April 26, 2025. The contest is shaping up to be a race between the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and the National People’s Party (NPP).
