Police Probe D750K Fraud Case Involving ‘Scammers’ Posing as Farmers in Abuko

The Gambia Police Force has launched an investigation into a fraud case involving D750,000 allegedly swindled by individuals posing as farmers in Abuko, West Coast Region.

According to the police, the incident was reported on November 14, 2024, by a 49-year-old businesswoman from Latrikunda Sabiji. The complainant claimed she was deceived by scammers who pretended to be legitimate businessmen engaged in farming.

“The Police in Abuko are investigating a case of “Obtaining money by False pretenses” amounting to D750,000 reported on 14/11/24. Reportedly, the complainant; a 49-year-old businesswoman from Latrikunda Sabiji, parted with the stated amount to scammers disguised as genuine businessmen engaged in farming activities. After parting with the money to the supposed partners, further requests for extra funds were made, thus raising suspicion. Subsequently, the victim filed a complaint at Abuko station for a police probe,” the police announced.

The Police report that three suspects were apprehended during the course of the investigation in Jarra Soma and other locations.

“They were subjected to preliminary interrogations, during which they admitted to the act. All three suspects were cautioned, charged, and detained, pending further police probe. Efforts are underway to trace the funds and bring all those involved to justice. The Gambia Police Force remains committed to combat fraud and urges the public to stay vigilant against scammers,” they concluded.
