Since the incident that killed 2 people in Faraba, both the country’s interior minister Ebrima Mballow and police chief Landing Kinteh have said they did not authorise the use of fire arms.
The Gambian police have announced an arrest of five officers whose services have been suspended as investigations deepen into the circumstances that cost two people their lives.
The officers are two Field Commanders – Superintendent Baboucarr Cham and ASP Musa Fatty and three other ranks – Nuha Colley, Momodou S. Jallow and Musa Badjie.
The armed wing of the police caused outrage in the country when they open fire on civilians on Monday killing 2.
Six civilians in the persons of Ousman Jassey, Sunkaru Jarju, Bakary Badjie, Salifu Darboe and Modou Kujabi were also arrested. Efforts are currently underway to grant them bail.
The Office of the Inspector General of Police Landing Kinteh has announced launching an investigation into the circumstances that led to the unfortunate occurrence.
“Preliminary findings indicate that Bakary Kujabi and Ismaila Bah lost their lives whilst six civilians and sixteen police officers sustained injuries,” the police said in a statement.
“Two caterpillars and five trucks were vandalized and set on fire. The police guard post was burnt down and four compounds were set ablaze while three were vandalized.”
