Police chief resigns over 3 protesters’ death
Landing Kinteh, Gambia’s Inspector General of Police has resigned on Thursday, three days after his men opened fire at protesters killing 3 people.
The armed wing of the Gambian police on Monday opened fire at protesters in Faraba in Western Region of Gambia killing 2 on the spot and injuring several others.
One of the injured later died at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital bringing the total to 3.
However, Kinteh has maintained that he did not order the use of fire arms on protesters. The country’s interior ministry also said he did not authorize the use of fire arms on protesters.
Gambian leader President Adama Barrow has visited the wounded protesters on Tuesday at the hospital and promised swift action against the police who killed the protesters.
On Wednesday, Barrow commissioned an independent inquiry into the incident.
