Members of the National Assembly, on Tuesday, ratified two visa exemption agreements between The Gambia, Indonesia, and Azerbaijan for holders of diplomatic and service passports.

The motions were presented by Hon. Momodou Tangara, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, for approval.

Minister Tangara explained that nationals of the countries involved, holding diplomatic and service passports, will be exempt from visa requirements for entry, exit, transit, and temporary stays of up to thirty days.

He highlighted that these agreements could enhance business and investment activities, potentially boosting economic growth and development in the involved countries. “This may lead to increased trade and investment opportunities, contributing to economic growth and development in both countries.”

The Minister also emphasized the cultural benefits, stating that the agreements will facilitate easier travel for diplomats, technicians, and public figures between The Gambia and Indonesia.

“This can lead to greater mutual understanding, appreciation of cultural diversity, and collaboration in cultural initiatives. By entering into this agreement, both Governments demonstrated their commitment to mutual respect, goodwill and friendship,” he said.

He said it serves as a symbol of cooperation and solidarity between The Gambia and Indonesia, reinforcing their commitment to positive diplomatic relations.

The agreement with Azerbaijan is specifically for diplomatic passport holders. Minister Tangara noted that it aims to foster closer diplomatic relations and cooperation between The Gambia and Azerbaijan. The National Assembly will review and ratify this agreement to ensure it aligns with national laws and interests.

“It fosters closer diplomatic relations and promotes cooperation between the Gambia and Azerbaijan. The national assembly may review and ratify this agreement to ensure its compliance with national laws and interests.”

“Nationals of the state of either party who are holders of valid diplomatic passports traveling to the territory of the state of the other party to assume duties in their respective diplomatic representations, consular posts, or permanent missions accredited to international organizations located in the territory of the other party, as well as their family members forming part of their household holding valid diplomatic passports, shall be accredited by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the receiving country”, the agreement started.

He stated that whenever a new passport model is issued or modifications are made to those already exchanged, the other party will be informed of these changes through diplomatic channels at least 30 days prior to the new or modified passport coming into effect.

He further explained that the notification must include a sample of the new or modified documents, along with details on their application.

Minister Tangara highlighted that by entering into this agreement, both governments reaffirm their commitment to mutual respect, goodwill, and friendship. This agreement symbolizes cooperation and solidarity between The Gambia, Indonesia, and Azerbaijan, strengthening their diplomatic ties.

During the debate, all Members who spoke expressed support for the motion, while urging the Minister to extend visa exemptions to holders of service passports from Azerbaijan.

In response to the concerns raised by the Honorable Members, the Minister clarified that securing visa exemptions involves extensive negotiations.

” As we are aware, the biggest challenge the world is facing is migration; therefore, taking such a decision to open up and allow each and every one to have access without a visa will bring them major criticism in their countries,” he told the members.
