The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) received 104 complaints of alleged human rights violations in 2022, according to Chairman Emmanuel Daniel Joof. Of these complaints, 87 were successfully investigated and resolved.
Joof said that 22 of the complaints, representing 21% of the total, were brought against law enforcement agencies.
“In 2022 the National Human Rights Commission received a hundred and four complaints of alleged human rights violations, of which 87 were successfully investigated and resolved. 22 of the complaints received, which represents 21% of the alleged complaints of human rights violations were brought against law enforcement agency namely the police, the Gambia Amy force, the National drug law Enforcement agency and Gambia immigration” the chairman revealed on Wednesday.
The NHRC chairman said that the commission will be monitoring the implementation of the Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC) recommendations and providing live updates to the public. He also said that the commission will continue to popularize the implementation of the TRRC recommendations through social mobilization at the community level, radio, and television.
Joof made these remarks on Wednesday while updating the media about the NHRC’s overview of 2022 highlights, key publications, and expectations for 2023 in promoting and protecting human rights in The Gambia.
The NHRC is an independent body that was established in 2013 to promote and protect human rights in The Gambia. The commission has a mandate to investigate allegations of human rights violations, make recommendations to the government, and educate the public about human rights.
