The police prosecutors have on Monday sought an adjournment in the case against Yankuba Touray to buy them time to amend their charge sheet and strengthen their case.
Touray was arrested about two weeks ago and charged with tampering with witness before the Truth Commission investigating the human rights violations of the former dictator Yahya Jammeh.
Touray and Fatoumatta Jahumpa Ceesay allegedly called Commission witness Alagie Kanyi, the first witness to have confessed to killings, and asked him not to “mind TRRC”.
According to the TRRC Act, the two could face up to three years in jail or a fine of D1 million or both if they are convicted.
Ceesay who was out of the country at the time of Touray’s arrest was also arrested and charged to court on Friday, March 8 for the same allege crime.
The police prosecutor Almameh Manga told the court on Monday that new evidences have emerged in the wake of Jahumpa Ceesay’s arrest which could change everything in the trial.
“Investigations have taken a new dimension and new evidences have began to emerge,” said Manga, suggesting that they may have had new information from Ceesay which could change everything.
“The adjournment will give us adequate time to amend the charge sheet and make progress,” added Manga.
The case against Touray resumes on March 22, Friday, at 11 a.m.
