The National Water and Electricity Company Limited (NAWEC) has announced that it is cracking down on electricity theft. In a press statement, NAWEC said that it has recently apprehended some culprits and that it will be taking legal action against offenders.
“It has come to the attention of the National Water and Electricity Company Limited (NAWEC) that there have been some unscrupulous acts of electricity theft. Recently, NAWEC’s task force has clamped down on some of the culprits, and henceforth, in collaboration with the security forces, NAWEC will initiate legal proceedings against offenders by bringing them before a court of law,” the statement reads.
NAWEC cautions against tampering with cash power meters and engaging in other unlawful activities, emphasizing that such actions constitute grave offenses carrying severe repercussions. These consequences encompass potential harm to the meter, electrical fires, and even the risk of fatal electrocution. Furthermore, these illicit actions have the detrimental effect of depriving NAWEC of essential revenue required for its day-to-day operations and maintenance.
“Tampering with cash power meters or engaging in illegal or bypassing connections are serious offences that can have severe consequences, including damaging the meter, causing electrical fires, and even resulting in death through electrocution. It is also a crime that deprives NAWEC of the much-needed revenue for its daily operations and maintenance,” the statement said.
The statement concludes with NAWEC making a commitment to delivering dependable and cost-effective electricity and water services to their clientele.
“NAWEC is committed to providing its customers with reliable and affordable electricity and water services. However, this can only be achieved by putting an end to the act of vandalism and electricity theft with the help of the Gambian people. The public is reminded that NAWEC’s inspection team, in collaboration with the security forces, is now working 24 hours a day throughout the country to combat this issue.
