The Ministry of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs has issued a stern reminder to Chiefs and Alkalos across the country to refrain from imposing unauthorized fees on land transactions.

In a directive issued in July, the Ministry instructed all Alkalolu and district chiefs to stop charging fees for land transactions immediately.

“The Ministry of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs wishes to issue a firm reminder to all Chiefs and Alkalos regarding the imposition of unauthorized levies on land transactions. Despite our previous communication on this matter, we continue to receive complaints from the public indicating that some Alkalos are still charging fees for these transactions. While the Ministry acknowledges and respects the cultural practice of accepting voluntary gifts as gestures of goodwill, we emphasize that these must remain voluntary and not be linked to any land transaction,” the Ministry said.

The Ministry warns that imposing mandatory fees in connection with land transactions is strictly forbidden.

“As the Ministry will not tolerate actions that compromise the integrity of land transactions within our communities, we hereby direct that this practice cease immediately. Failure to comply with this directive will result in sanctions against any individuals found in violation.

We appreciate your cooperation in upholding transparency and integrity in all land-related transactions,” they concluded.
