Ministry of Interior Launches Investigation into Allegations of Missing Cocaine Blocks

The Ministry of Interior has instructed the Gambia Police Force to investigate allegations surrounding the disappearance of cocaine blocks meant for destruction.

In a statement, the Ministry expressed concern over these disturbing allegations, which emerged following the recent public destruction of seized illegal drugs by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG).The annual public destruction exercise, the statement emphasized, is intended to demonstrate transparency and accountability in the handling of seized drugs from the point of arrest to their disposal. As the overseeing body for DLEAG, the Ministry condemned any actions or omissions that would undermine the country’s commitment to a drug-free Gambia.

“The Ministry of Interior expresses concerns over the disturbing allegations of malicious activities arising in the aftermath of the recent destruction of seized prohibited drugs and related substances by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG). The Public Destruction of the seized prohibited drugs is an annual exercise that is aimed at demonstrating public accountability and transparency in the handling of drugs from the point of arrest to destruction. The Ministry that is mandated to perform oversight functions and supervision of this Agency (DLEAG) has condemned in the strongest terms any actions or omissions that compromise our commitment to a drug-free Gambia,” they said. Given the seriousness of the claims, the Ministry has directed the Gambia Police Force to conduct a full investigation. This inquiry will seek to uncover the facts, identify any individuals involved, and ensure that justice is served. The Ministry emphasized that any form of misconduct, negligence, or complicity will not be tolerated, as it could erode the public’s trust in the country’s institutions.

“In light of the gravity of these allegations, the Ministry has directed The Gambia Police Force to launch an immediate and thorough investigation. This investigation will leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth, identifying any individuals involved, and ensuring that justice is served to the climax. The Ministry will not tolerate any form of misconduct, negligence, or complicity that may undermine the trust of The Gambian people in our institutions,” the Interior Ministry said.The Ministry reiterated its commitment to a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy towards drug-related activities, reaffirming its dedication to strengthening efforts against the drug problem.

“We reaffirm our unreserved commitment to protecting the well-being and safety of our citizens and residents. The Ministry of Interior also calls on the public to cooperate with law enforcement authorities by providing any relevant information that may assist in the ongoing investigation. A united front against drugs is essential to achieving a safer, healthier, and drug-free Gambia. While we urge all Gambians to remain vigilant, be assured that the government will take all necessary actions to uphold the rule of law, maintain public confidence, and ensure the security and stability of our beloved nation,” they concluded.
