Ministry of Health: 367,400 Gambians Smoke Cigarettes

The Ministry of Health in the Gambia has disclosed that 16.7% of the Gambian population, approximately 367,400 people, are cigarette smokers.

In a statement shared on their Facebook page, the Ministry highlighted the financial impact of this habit, noting that Gambian smokers spend a staggering 6.6 billion Dalasis annually on cigarettes.

“Did you know that in the Gambia, 16.7% of the population smokes cigarettes, which equates to 367,400 smokers? These cigarette smokers spend 6.6 billion Dalasis annually on cigarettes,” the Health Ministry said through their Facebook page.

The Ministry urged the population to quit smoking for their health and well-being, warning of the broader economic consequences, which include:

-Loss of productivity

-Increased healthcare expenditures

-Reduced quality of life

-Financial strain due to potential medical costs

The Ministry emphasized the importance of quitting smoking to improve overall health and reduce economic burdens.
