Migration Activist Appeals for Support of Gambians Detained in Germany Facing Deportation
By Buba Gagigo
Yahya Sonko, a migration and human rights activist, has called for urgent support for Gambians detained in Germany awaiting deportation.
“In light of recent developments, it has come to our attention that numerous Gambians residing in Germany have been detained in preparation for a chartered deportation flight scheduled for 28 May 2024. This situation is of significant concern, and we are taking all legally permissible steps to assist those affected. This afternoon, as an activist dedicated to supporting Gambians in the diaspora, I have engaged with lawyers and other helpers to challenge several of these deportations.
“These legal processes are ongoing, and we remain committed to exploring every avenue to protect the rights and dignity of those at risk.
“This evening, based on reliable communications with my close contacts within the EU and other sources, I can confirm that the deportation scheduled for 28 May 2024 was a request from the German authorities but has not been approved,” Yahya said in a press statement.
He strongly urged all concerned parties to immediately contact any individuals who may be detained at the Pforzheim deportation detention center and provide them with legal and other necessary assistance.
