The Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Memounatou Ibrahima, paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency President Adama Barrow at the State House in Banjul.

Mémounatou Ibrahima, who served as Vice President of the Togolese National Assembly in 2015, was elected to represent the Togolese National Assembly on the High Council of the Judiciary on May 23, 2023.

Her appointment took place during a session in Kano, Nigeria. On Thursday, May 23, 2024, she was elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly in Kano, Nigeria, making her the first female to hold the position in the ECOWAS Parliament.

The Togolese national brings with her a wealth of experience, having previously served as the Third Deputy Speaker during the Fifth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, a position she held since 2021.

Her election underscores the organization’s commitment to gender inclusivity and empowerment within its leadership ranks.

After a closed-door meeting with the President, the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament stated that her visit focused on examining the protocol of free movement of persons and goods within the ECOWAS region.”The 6th legislature of the ECOWAS parliament is holding a delocalized meeting, here in Banjul. The meeting is focusing on examining the protocol of free movement of persons and goods in the ECOWAS region. On the sideline of our meeting we had the privilege of being received by his Excellency Adama Barrow, to whom we expressed all our thanks for the warm welcome and the facilities extended to us since we came here,” she said. 

She encouraged the president to continue his efforts to maintain peace so that regional integration can become a reality.”We have told his Excellency admiration for his personal involvement in maintaining peace and unity in his Country, The Gambia and also the sub-region. We really endured his Excellency to continue his efforts to ensure that regional integration can become a reality. His Excellency gave us a lot of useful advice and of course that we are going to implement it as much as possible,” she said.
