MC Cham Jr Will Not Seek Re-election As National Youth President Of GDC
By Buba Gagigo
MC Cham Jr. has confirmed to this medium that he will not seek re-election as the National Youth President of the Gambia Democratic Congress at their forthcoming party congress. Mr. Cham stated that he made his intention not to contest known to the party secretariat four months ago.
“I have already informed them of my intentions of not contesting and the admin secretary has already minuted that. They have minuted that I will not contest the National Youth President position in the upcoming Congress and that communication happened before my visit with president Adama Barrow. I informed them four months ago”, he told Kerr Fatou’s weekly political show, “Politic Kaacha”, on Tuesday.
Elaborating on his decision not to contest, MC Cham Jr says he made this decision based on his democratic principles of observing term limits in political office.
“I am the Youth President of the party (GDC) and have served for two terms in office. Although the party constitution has no term limits, there is a technical committee at GDC overseeing the Congress. When they called me to ask about my position towards the party or the way forward for the party, I told them that I will not run for the National Youth President position again because I believe in term limits and I have served for two terms.
“So I believe it is the right time to give the chance to others in the party to handle the position, and I will look for something else. I have served as the head of the youth wing since the party’s founding in 2016. I am not a youth anymore and should give people in that age cohort a chance to serve.” he said on the program.
On the question of what other position he will contest for, considering he has given notice of his intention not to seek re-election to the Youth President position, Mr. Cham was noncommittal.
“That is left to the party, to check and see where I can handle well. They (the Party) should decide.” He concluded.
