Rohey Malick Lowe, the Mayor of Banjul City Council, accompanied by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, presented her awards to the President of the Republic of The Gambia in his hometown, Mankamang Kunda, on Saturday.
Earlier this month, Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe was honored with the Dr. Benjamin Barber Global Cities Award by the Global Parliament of Mayors. This award recognizes mayors for their outstanding contributions to advancing global urban governance and inspiring city leadership.
After presenting the awards to the president, Mayor Lowe stated that the Dr. Benjamin Barber Award is the highest level of recognition a mayor can receive.
“We are here to present the Award that I received from the UN-Habitat and also from the Dr. Benjamin Barber award which was given to me by the president of North Macedonia to the President and I am here in my capacity as a Gambian and as a mayor to present the award. This is the highest order of award that a mayor can receive, that is the Dr. Barber award,” The Mayor said.
She added that the President was enthusiastic about receiving the award and extended congratulations.
“The president’s reaction was just as before because as you all know he came out in his capacity as a president and also as the leader of the National People’s Party and congratulated me and that means a lot to me and again as you can see he was very happy to receive the award and he once again congratulated me as well,” She said.
The Mayor emphasized the significance of the award for Banjul City Council, dedicating it to the youth and women of The Gambia. “They deserve this recognition,” she affirmed, expressing gratitude to the people of Banjul for their votes, her party, and the citizens of The Gambia.
“The award means a lot to me and when it was given to me I dedicated the award to the youth and the women of the Gambia and I think they deserve it,” She Said.
The President is currently on his constitutionally mandated Meet the People’s tour.
