The Government of The Gambia has confirmed the appointment of Major Salifu Corr, former Commander of the Kanilai Military Post, as the new Director of Forestry. His appointment took effect on February 21, 2025.
In an official communication, the government stated:
“This is to inform you that the Public Service Commission has approved your appointment and redesignation to the position of Director of Forestry at the Department of Forestry under the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Natural Resources with effect from February 21, 2025, You will draw salary at the rate of D180, 588.00 (One Hundred and Eighty Thousand Five Hundred and Eighty-Eight Dalasis per annum on Grade 12 of the Government Integrated Pay Scare,” the government said.
The Alkamba Times previously reported that Major Corr’s appointment comes amid tensions between the Minister of Environment and officials within the Department of Forestry (DoF).
“The insider alleges that the rift stems from disagreements over policy decisions, including the controversial degazettement of forest parks and reserves. Major Corr, once accused of authorizing ECOMIG forces to fire on Kanilai protesters in 2018, is reportedly being positioned to lead the department amid these disputes. The shakeup extends beyond the top post. Effective March 3, 2025, other military officers will replace regional forestry directors nationwide,” the Alkamba Times reported before the government’s confirmation.
