From what we have seen and heard so far at the Commission of Inquiry into the area councils being broadcast live on radio and TV, it is very likely that the government would eventually achieve the opposite of what their objective was in setting up of the commission, that is to uncover the corruption and inefficiency they alleged to have existed in the councils. From what we have so far heard from the Permanent Secretary of the ministry of Regional Governments and Lands, the ministry had not only been doing things according to their own whims and caprices, but they had also demonstrated the inefficient and chaotic manner that they had been dealing with the councils, in complete disregard of the Local Government Act and existing legal procedures. Therefore, I think this commission is a good opportunity for the mayors and chairmen of the municipalities and area councils to show the whole country how the government had failed in their legal responsibilities to the people of their areas.
