Lawyer Lamin S. Camara has confirmed to Kerr Fatou that he was denied access to meet his client, Mbemba Drammeh, a former NPP supporter who was recently arrested by the police following an interview with Kerr Fatou.

“I went there around five o’clock until after 7pm, and I was refused access. They just said stand outside and wait for us. I stood outside, we were told Pa Alieu Jawara was inside. He came out and left. My colleague called him, but he switched off his phone and he was already told that I was standing outside waiting for him. Pa Alieu Jawara was there, and I saw him driving past me while I was outside. No one talked to us until we left,” Lawyer Camara explained.

He expressed frustration over the lack of adherence to legal procedures, adding, “The principle I have developed now is that if any of my clients is detained beyond the 72hrs, I will file a lawsuit against the state. There’s no compromise on that. Somebody has to force the state to do what is right. The laws are not there just for the sake of it. They are there for the state to comply with,” LS Camara told Kerr Fatou.

The Gambia Police Force, in a statement on Thursday, disclosed that Mbemba Drammeh was arrested over allegations of participating in activities that led to the alleged rigging of the 2021 presidential election.
