Lawmakers approve five for appointment into human rights commission

The National Assembly has on Thursday approved the nomination of five (5) people out of nine (9) shortlisted candidates as commissioners of the National Human Rights Commission.

The five candidates approved by lawmakers will now be forwarded to President Adama Barrow for approval.

The Commissioners are human rights lawyer Emmanuel Joof, Jainaba Johm, Njundu Drammeh, Imam Baba Leigh and Dr. Agnes Adama Campell Kallay.

The other four shortlist who were dropped were Tabaski Njie Sarr, Dawda Samba, Jabel Ceesay, and Haddija Jawara.

The shortlisting was done by the Public Appointment Standing Committee of the lawmaking body which met over the issue on November 7.

The nine candidates were vetted and shortlisted by Justice Ministry and civil society organizations across the country.
