Jaha Dukureh, a women’s rights activist and anti-female genital mutilation (FGM) campaigner, has called for dialogue between civil society actors and religious leaders in The Gambia following a recent clash over FGM/C.

Ms. Dukureh took to Twitter to make the overture.

“Calling each other names won’t get us anywhere. National dialogue is essential at this point between civil society actors and religious leaders in The Gambia,” she wrote on Twitter.

In a separate tweet, the women’s rights activist expressed her desire to step back from working full-time on FGM in the Gambia.

“I honestly don’t want to go back to working on FGM as a full-time job in the Gambia. Agriculture is my passion. I am trying to uplift women out of poverty. Someone tell Imam Fatty we want to talk to him please,” she said.

In a subsequent tweet, Jaha wrote that they are open to dialogue with the religious leaders on the contentious issue making the headlines.
