Islamic Groups Confront Anti-FGM Advocates in Parliament as Repeal Bill Scheduled for Introduction
By Ramatoulie Jawo
As the highly anticipated and contentious issue of the women’s amendment bill, aiming to repeal the ban on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), approaches, Islamic groups led by religious leaders are facing off against Anti-FGM advocates within the chambers of the National Assembly. Both factions are urging lawmakers to take a stance favorable to their stance.
Presently, both groups are assembled at the National Assembly, awaiting the tabling of the bill seeking to repeal the ban on FGM.
Anti-FGM advocates denounce the practice as harmful and inhumane, violating the rights of women and girls, while Islamic leaders argue that opposing it is a challenge to Islam and their religious rights.
Today marks the commencement of the first session of the 2024 legislative year at the National Assembly.
Both parties are present, awaiting the assembly to achieve a quorum to commence proceedings.
The bill will be introduced by Honorable Ahmad Gibba, the National Assembly member for the Foni Kansala constituency.
