Ebrima Ceesay, a 29-year-old Gambian, is appealing for public support after a devastating accident in 2019 left him with severe injuries.
The incident occurred in Faraba, West Coast Region when he fell from a truck, and its tire crushed his leg, causing extensive damage to his ankle and hip joints. Since then, Ebrima has been struggling with mobility, relying on crutches to walk.
Following the accident, Ebrima was rushed to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul, where he underwent surgery. Doctors inserted metal plates in his leg to aid his recovery. However, he continues to experience chronic pain and discomfort due to the implants.
Speaking to Kerr Fatou, Ebrima shared his ordeal and the challenges he faces in accessing medical care.
“I had an accident in 2019 while we were collecting sand. After finishing work and heading home, I fell from the truck, and the tires ran over me, severely injuring my ankle and hip joints, as well as affecting my backbone. I was taken to Banjul, where I underwent surgery, and metal was placed in my leg. It is still there, but it causes me a lot of pain and discomfort” he said.
He shared the hardships of living with his disability, explaining that the accident has left him dependent on the support of others. Despite his efforts to have the metal removed from his body, he has been unable to secure a medical appointment.
“We returned to Banjul to have the metal removed, but we were told that only one doctor performs this type of surgery, and he is fully booked. They said I couldn’t get an appointment at the moment. Since November, I have been trying to schedule one, but they keep postponing it for another three months. They also took X-rays and informed me that my bones were completely damaged and needed to be replaced, but I don’t think that procedure can be done in this country,” he explained.
Ebrima is urgently appealing to the public for financial assistance to support his medical treatment.
“This accident has completely changed my life. I used to work and support my family, but now I am unable to do anything. I desperately need help to receive treatment, whether here or abroad. I have been seeking assistance for a long time, but I have yet to receive any” he pleaded.
