Seedy Mucktarr Touray, Inspector General of Police (IGP), has described Baboucarr Bahoum’s recent apology to the people of Kiang as a goodwill gesture, despite condemning the initial remarks as “uncalled-for” and “unnecessary.”
Addressing the controversy, IGP Touray made it clear that he did not support Bahoum’s statements. “I am not aligning myself with the remarks made by Mr. Bahoum. It’s very much uncalled-for, very unnecessary. And I don’t agree with those remarks,” Touray stated.
However, the police chief acknowledged the significance of Bahoum’s public apology, characterizing it as a positive step toward reconciliation. “Moving forward, every thing that takes water, be it a human being, be it animals, ruminants, they make mistakes, and some of those mistakes are the reason why when a goat or herd of cattle are crossing the road you will see a guy hit them, that is a miscalculation.” IGP Touray explained.
“I want to believe when Mr. Bahoum realized his mistake, he brought down the write-up and profoundly apologized to the people of Kiang and to the entire nation, I consider that a goodwill gesture from him,” he added.
The Gambia Police Force (GPF) previously disclosed that Bahoum, a supporter of the National People’s Party (NPP), was summoned for questioning regarding his controversial post.
Bahoum’s comments triggered widespread outrage, leading to demands for accountability. Although his apology, which included deleting the controversial post, was issued, it failed to calm the situation. Social media commentators are accusing the police force of selectively enforcing the law in favor of supporters of the ruling party.
