Mamourr Jobe, Gambia’s Inspector General of police has assured at the Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) that he is making efforts to digitalize record keeping at police stations.
He made the assurance at the truth commission during his appearance to produce certain dairies of the police which are expected to bear the names of the West African migrants killed on the order of former President Jammeh in July 2005.
When the diary from Kairaba Police station was produced, it was not in a good condition. As a result, no information could be obtained from it.
This prompted the Lead Counsel to ask Jobe whether he is going to do anything about record keeping at police stations.
“Yes, Counsel! I have already started. And hopefully before the end of this month [March], the records at the headquarters level and other regions, I would make sure that it’s (records) computerized. And it’s going to be stored in a separate store. The store is almost nearing completion now,” Jobe assured.
56 years after Independence, police stations in The Gambia still maintained manual record keeping which resulted to loss of certain information in some instances. But when this development takes effect, it will go a long way in safeguarding and the availability of information at the stations, when the need arises.
