Bakary Y. Badjie has confirmed in an audio recorded at a community outreach meeting and shared with this medium that he will be the mayoral candidate for the National People’s Party in the upcoming Local Government elections slated for May.
The Youth and Sports Minister, speaking in Wolof, could be heard making the pronouncement after the introductory message and touching on some of the achievements of previous councils.
“Ministerial positions are nice, and it is a grade above mayoral positions, but councils are where you can directly have an effect on the lives’ of people in a meaningful way and that is why after several consultations, I have decided to leave the ministerial position and run for Mayor. If elected, I will be able to fulfill what we campaigned on in 2018 when I ran as an independent, which is to have the council benefit the people in a meaningful way by providing roads, water, Markets, schools, and football fields. It is true that the ministry of Youth and Sports can build football fields, but it is the responsibility of local councils to build these facilities in their communities.
We have two elections coming up. The council elections are scheduled in April and Talibo Kongira is the NPP led coalition candidate for council for Latrikunda area and I will be the Candidate for the Mayoral in May.”
The National People’s Party (NPP) previously announced that three people applied to contest under NPP ticket for the upcoming Mayoral Election in the Kanifing Municipality. The party however promised to reveal their candidates on the 19th of February 2023 across the country.
