Hon. Mbowe Sworn-in As APNIG Deputy Chairperson

Hon. Alhagie Mbowe, the NAM for Upper Saloum has been sworn-in as the deputy chairman of the Africa Parliamentry Network on Internet Governance (APNIG) on Tuesday.

Hon. Neema Lugangira of Tanzania was sworn-in as Chairperson, while Hon. Sam George, a member of Ghanaian Parliament was sworn-in as the Secretary of the network.

The network is co-founded by Gambian Lawmaker Hon Alhagie Mbowe, just sworn in as the Deputy Chairperson of the network.

Africa Parliamentary Network on Internet Governance (APNIG) has been launched in Lilongwe, Malawi during the opening of the Africa Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF) on Tuesday that is scheduled to end on Thursday.

The (AfIGF) brought together multiple stakeholders in the internet ecosystem around the globe along with youth internet governance advocates and enthusiasts.

Hon. Almameh Gibba, member for Foni Kansala and Hon. Birom J. Sowe of Niamina West are part of the convergence of 28 parliamentarians from across the African continent for the launch of the APNIG which started with an inaugural two-day digital policy symposium.

Hon Mbowe, Deputy Chairman of APNIG said that parliamentarians have recognised digital challenges as a cross-border issue that should be responded to.

“Collectively, we have agreed to immediately start with implementing pertinent actions towards inclusive digital development in Africa such as capacity building for APNIG members to enable them to engage effectively in internet governance issues that impact the national level,” he said.

The network has also identified governance for an open and unfragmented Internet, the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa and data governance including data protection.
