The Gambia Teachers’ Union called for calm among teachers, while it conducts consultations with relevant stakeholders with a view to addressing any gaps in the proposed pay scale for civil servants; after complaints by the professional on social media about the new pay scale government proposed for the civil servants.

Gambia Teachers’ Union Young Teachers Platform said the scale seemingly undermines the position of teachers compared to other sectors; following sharing of the scale on social media.

“The Management of The Gambia Teachers’ Union has noted with concern the current debates and opinions surrounding the proposed new integrated pay scale for civil servants. It is important to note that the observations coming from the various teacher platforms are genuine and noteworthy. The leadership of the union wishes to inform all teachers that the GTU Secretariat is currently reviewing the proposed pay scale and the report to tease out the critical issues for analysis and necessary action.

“The union wishes to assure all teachers that the relevant stakeholders will be consulted with a view to addressing any gaps in the proposed pay scale. Furthermore, the union wishes to urge all teachers to remain calm and allow the leadership to engage meaningfully to resolve this matter soonest. Finally, the union wishes to thank all teachers for demonstrating confidence in your union,” the Union said in a statement on Tuesday.

This followed the government’s announcement of the approval of a new pay scale and grading system last month for civil servants.
