GRA closes Semlex, says no company is above the law
By Arfang M.S. Camara
Applicants for Gambian national ID card and driving license will have to wait before acquiring their documents following the closure of Semlex by Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) over alleged failure to pay tax.
At around 6am Monday, the agency raided the offices of the Belgian firm which was controversially contracted by the government to produce biometric ID cards and driver’s licenses.
The temporal closure of Semlex will last for three weeks, according to GRA’s Commissioner General Yankuba Darboe.
“We shut down Semlex because they were not paying taxes,” he said.
There are reports that Semlex has been issued a tax waiver by the Ministry of Interior. But GRA is said to have advised that the Interior Ministry is not eligible to give tax waiver. It can only be done by the Office of the President, through the authorisation of the President.
