The Gambia Press Union has on Thursday started a two-day training for twenty-one Gambian journalists on digital economy at Football Hotel in Old Yumdum.
The Digital Economy sometimes call the internet economy refers to an economy that is based on digital technologies.
The aim of the training, according to the president of the GPU Sheriff Bojang Jr, is to equip journalists with knowledge on how to report on the changing dynamics within the economy but also how to adapt to the fast changing media landscape.
Gambian media, as the country’s economy, is also going through a digital disruption which has seen the mainstream media struggle for audience with the rise of famous online platforms that also offers that same services as them.
The workshop has been sponsored by the International Federation of Journalists.
“This is about the future… Technology has come to redefine our profession—not just how we do the job but how we earn our living…,” said Saikou Jammeh, Secretary General of the GPU.
Meanwhile, Louis Thomasi, the regional director of International Federation of Journalist, emphasized the need for journalists to adapt to the changing media landscape.
“You must put yourself into it (technological transformation) or you are phased out…,” said Thomasi.
The workshop which ends on Friday will also focus of unionism and how to help GPU expand its membership and strengthen its bargaining capacity.
