The government of President Adama Barrow has given the green light to sell a majority stake of Gamcel, the national mobile operator, to private investors. This was disclosed by Information Minister Lamin Queen Jammeh on GRTS.
The minister said that the Cabinet had endorsed the proposal to split GAMTEL, the national fixed-line operator, into two separate entities offering wholesale and retail services.
“Cabinet considered and approved the transfer of GAMTEL fibre and Telecom assets to the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which will be significantly referred to as Gambia Fibre Company Limited for its operationalization
“Consider and approved the tender process for the privatization and disposal of 60% of GAMCEL share to private investors and approval was granted,” the information minister told GRTS.
The move to privatize and restructure GAMTEL/Gamcel comes as the company faces serious financial and operational difficulties that jeopardize its sustainability.
