Hon. Mama Kandeh, leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has pledged to implement stricter penalties for violent crimes if elected into office. Speaking on Thursday while unveiling his party’s security policy, Kandeh expressed deep concern over the rising crime rate in The Gambia and vowed to take decisive action to restore safety and order.
“Today, I speak to you with a heavy heart, acutely aware of the multifaceted challenges we face as a nation. The Gambia, once celebrated as the smiling coast of West Africa, now cripples with a distressing rise in crime, violence and insecurity. This reality cast a shadow over our beloved country, instilling fear in the hearts of every Gambian and all who call this nation home. The current security challenges in recent months, we have witnessed an alarming increase in violent crimes. Murders and assaults have become distressingly common armed robberies. Our citizens are no longer safe in their homes or on the streets,” the GDC leader said.
He highlighted the alarming increase in violent crimes, including murders, assaults, and armed robberies, emphasizing that citizens no longer feel safe in their homes or on the streets. According to Kandeh, drug trafficking and the proliferation of illicit substances have contributed significantly to the breakdown of social order and increased violence in the country.
“Youth unemployment, a staggering unemployment rate among our youth, has left many vulnerable to criminal influence and despair. The fear of crime looms large in our communities, affecting our daily lives and undermining our sense of Safety. While I commend our police and security forces for their dedication and efforts. It is evident that they are handicapped by a lack of resources, training and support,” he said.
Kandeh criticized the current administration for failing to address these pressing security concerns, leaving Gambians vulnerable. He further accused the government of corruption, alleging that resources that could have been allocated to security improvements and youth development have been misappropriated.
“The Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) is committed to restoring peace and tranquility to our nation. We believe that a collaborative and comprehensive approach is essential to tackle these security challenges.” Kandeh said.
As part of his vision for a safer Gambia, Kandeh outlined key initiatives a GDC government would implement:
Creation of a border control unit,
1. Establish a specialized unit dedicated to monitoring and securing our borders and implement advanced surveillance systems, including drones and smart technologies, to detect and prevent illegal activities.
2. Enhance surveillance systems,
install CCTV cameras in high-crime areas and major urban centers to deter criminal activities and assist law enforcement. Utilize technology to improve communication and coordination among security agencies.
3. Increase wages and support for security personnel.
Raise salaries and offer incentives to police and security personnel to attract and retain qualified individuals; provide comprehensive training and resources to equip our security forces with the tools they need to effectively combat crime.
4. Zero tolerance policy on crime,
implement a strict no compromise policy towards crime, ensuring shift and decisive action against offenders, and foster a culture of accountability within our law enforcement agencies to restore public Trust.
5. Legislative reforms and strict penalties, review and amend existing laws to impose stricter penalties for violent crimes, drug trafficking and robbery, introduce new legislation that addresses imagining security threats and ensure that our laws reflect the current realities we face.
6. Youth unemployment and job creation.
Launch Initiative aims at reducing youth unemployment through skill development and vocational training programs and creating job opportunities in sectors such as agriculture, tourism and technology, ensuring that our youth can contribute positively to society. Establish mentorship programs that connect young people with role models and leaders in various fields.
7. Combating corruption,
implement strict anti-corruption measures, ensuring transparency and accountability in government operations, establish independent oversight bodies to monitor public spending and resource allocation, and ensure that funds are directed towards community needs and security improvements.
9. Community engagement and empowerment.
Launch community policing initiatives to foster collaboration between citizens and law enforcement. Empower local communities to take an active role in maintaining safety and security in their neighborhoods.
“We cannot allow fear to define our lives in our nation. The Gambia deserves to reclaim its status as a peaceful and secured country. Together, we can rebuild our communities, restore public trust in our institutions, and create a safe environment for all. Let us unite in our resolve to support one another and work towards a brighter, safer future for the Gambia; the GDC is committed to this course, and with your support, we can turn our vision into reality,” he concluded.
