The Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency [NDMA] has confirmed that Gambia Democratic Congress [GDC] has donated D100, 000 to windstorm victims through the Agency.
“GDC donated D100, 000 in response to the president’s call to support the disaster [windstorm] victims. He [Mama Kandeh] is calling on all genuine Gambians to emulate the same thing because this is national tragedy,” Sanna Dahaba said.
Asked how the money would be disbursed to the victims, the NDMA boss replied, “Obviously, that is what we are to determine. I am just going there to assess the situation. I am on my way to the North Bank Region.”
The party leader Mama Kandeh presented the cash to the agency at its office in Kanifing on Wednesday.
The staff of NDMA, including the executive director and other members of the GDC party witnessed the presentation of the cash by the 5-year-old opposition party.
The windstorm hit the country last week. It has so far killed 10 people, affected over 3, 000 people, of which more than 1, 500 have been internally displaced, mainly in the North Bank Region, according to the NDMA preliminary assessment.
Since the disaster struck, the President Adama Barrow urged good Samaritans to support those affected in any way, in order to ease the burden of the disaster on them.
Meanwhile, the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) is an opposition political party registered in 2016 led by Mama Kandeh. Currently, the party is gearing up for the December presidential election with optimism for victory.
