The Gambia Action Party (GAP) is deeply concerned by the recent remarks attributed to President Adama Barrow during a closed-door meeting with elders in the Lower River Region, which have sparked widespread criticism and controversy. The President’s reference to a specific tribe—despite his own heritage as a Mandinka—was not only unnecessary but also highly unbecoming of the leader of a diverse and united nation like The Gambia.

While we acknowledge that the statements made by the President may reflect his personal experiences during the 2021 elections, his choice to mention a tribe in such a manner was ill-advised. As the head of state, President Barrow is expected to rise above tribal sentiments and serve as a symbol of unity, fostering harmony among all ethnic groups. By singling out one tribe, he risks creating division and mistrust among citizens at a time when we should be building bridges and strengthening our shared identity as Gambians.

The Gambia is a nation celebrated for its ethnic diversity and peaceful coexistence. However, the President’s comments have the potential to undermine this harmony and feed into divisive narratives that are detrimental to national unity. Leadership demands tact, wisdom, and a conscious effort to avoid language that could polarize the populace.
We urge President Barrow to reflect on the implications of his words and prioritize inclusive dialogue that unites rather than divides. As leaders, our role is to set an example of tolerance and respect for all, irrespective of ethnic or political affiliations.
The Gambia Action Party remains committed to promoting peace, stability, and unity in The Gambia. We call on all Gambians to reject divisive rhetoric and work together towards building a cohesive and prosperous nation.
