Gambia’s UN Representative Bids Farewell To UN Secretary-General

The Gambia’s representative at the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Lang Yabou has on Friday bade farewell to the UN secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.
“On Friday 26 August 2022, accompanied by the diplomatic staff of the Mission, I visited the UN Secretary-General to bid him farewell,” he said in a statement on Friday.
As he bid farewell , the respected Gambian diplomat revealed that his conversation with UN Secretary General centred on Gambian and global issues.
“For my part, I extended greetings from His Excellency President Barrow and the Government and People of The Gambia and used the occasion to once again thank him and the UN system for the support and partnership extended to The Gambia especially the deployment of the Peacebuilding Fund, support for our transition, development endeavors, peacekeeping, sending a team of experts to Banjul following recent floods, etc.
“I assured him that moving forward, the Government of The Gambia is committed to pursuing development, peace and security, democracy, human rights, rule of law, climate change, youth and women empowerment, participation in peacekeeping, etc and requested for the UN’s continuous support and partnership,” Ambassador Yarboe said.
The Gambian diplomat said the UN Chief in his response, conveyed his fraternal greetings to the President, the Government and People of The Gambia and assured them of his and the UN’s continuous support and partnership, especially in the stated areas.
He said the UN Secretary-General also commended The Gambia and the team in New York for the great strives registered.
“The UN Boss was full of praises for the team stating that “under your leadership, your team has raised The Gambia’s voice at a level more than the size of the country at the global level”. It was a great day for The Gambia and Team New York at the UNSG’s office,” he concluded.
Ambassador Yabou was the Representative of the Gambia to the United Nations, who presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres in 2018.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Yabou was Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Gambia to Spain from 2013 to 2018, with concurrent accreditation to Italy, Greece, Malta and Portugal, as well as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
From 2012 to 2013, Mr. Yabou was the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Administration and Finance, for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Gambia. He was also the Deputy Ambassador/Deputy High Commissioner and Head of Chancery at the Gambia High Commission in Nigeria from 2008 to 2012.
