The Gambia Transport union’s president, Omar Ceesay has announced that they have agreed to call off their sit-down strike, less than 24 hours after it has started, following a close door meeting with Secretary General, Nuha Touray.
Drivers across the country embarked on a sit-down strike on Monday in reaction to the government’s alleged failure to meet their demands.
They reportedly demanded that drivers be allowed to carry passengers to full capacity as opposed to the state of public emergency regulations that compelled them to carry half of what their vehicle were normally licensed to carry, in observance of Covid-19 social distancing rules.
According to the union president, they had a meeting with the Secretary General, Nuha Touray, “which will continue tomorrow” but revealed that in the meantime, they have “called off the strike, and all drivers can go back to work tomorrow.”
The union reported that they had initially written to the government seven times, inviting discussion but were never replied to.
