Gambia Police Open Fire, Arrest Two After Clash at Jah Oil

The Gambia Police Force has issued a statement detailing their response to a violent altercation at the Jah Oil located at Bond Road in Banjul on the evening of Tuesday, January 28, 2025. The incident involved a confrontation between staff members at the fueling station and a group of individuals.

According to the police, officers were dispatched to the scene to de-escalate the situation. However, they were met with resistance from the suspects. As tensions increased, additional police personnel were called for support. Despite their presence, the aggressors continued to resist and approached the officers.

“As tensions escalated, the officers called for reinforcements. Even with additional personnel at the scene, the aggressors continued to resist and advanced toward the officers,” they wrote. The police said they issued multiple warnings and fired warning shots to restore order. However, the individuals persisted in their defiance and launched an attack on the officers. In response and in self-defense, one of the suspects was shot in the leg, resulting in his immediate arrest. Two other individuals were also taken into custody, while the remaining suspects fled the scene.

“Arrested Individuals:1. Momodou Njie (30, Njoro Tukulor, CRR) sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is receiving treatment at RVTH.2. ⁠Ousman Jobe (25, Tuba) – in custody. 3. ⁠Ousainou Njie (20, Dakar) – in custody,” they wrote. 

The suspects are facing assault-related charges and are cooperating with investigators. The police confirmed that efforts are ongoing to locate and apprehend the remaining individuals involved in the altercation. They have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to assist in maintaining public safety.
